It's Mum Season
Those pretty mums that are in full bloom now at your nursery are perfect for the patio, but they might not survive the winter if you put them in the ground. Florist or cutting mums, which are best used as annuals or indoors, aren't ideal for cold zones either.
Click here for more information on Garden Mums. Be sure to call Potted Petals for the list of hardy mums we can get for you.

Welcoming Butterflies

by Ilene Stermnerg
Whatever the size of your garden, you can add excitement and wonder by welcoming beautiful, delicate members of the Lepidoptera family to share your little plot of heaven on earth.
Despite their freewheeling, frivolous demeanor, butterflies follow a deliberate and complex regimen in their day-to-day doings. Their life-cycle consists of four stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (chrysalis) and adult (butterfly), each stage requiring specific food and environments.
The Life Cycle
Butterflies deposit eggs — singly or in clusters — in spring, summer or fall, depending on the species. A good nectar source promotes the production of large numbers of eggs. Some lay eggs on only one or a few plant species, others on many kinds, usually on those appropriate as larval food. Eggs usually hatch within a few days. Nine out of 10 eggs never become adults because predators, mainly birds, think the eggs, caterpillars and butterflies are delicious ...

The Surprising Secret to Beautiful Containers
Some container gardens are so gorgeous they almost look magical.
The secret to their beauty, however, is no mystery: It's about proper watering. Though it may seem basic, watering requires some finessing. It isn't always obvious how much water your containers need or how often they should be given a drink.

I found some terrific tips and suggestions from garden writer Kathleen Wiese. She explains how to adjust your watering methods in response to influences like heat, wind, the type of container and how long plants have been in the pot. She also describes simple drip systems, and she gives instructions for making your own from a plastic bottle (it's actually quite easy!).

Make Your Garden a Monarch Waystation
If you had the chance to help a butterfly you would, right? Well, now is your chance.
Every fall, millions of monarch butterflies make their annual migration from the U.S. and Canada to overwintering sites in Mexico and California. Their journey is long and perilous, so monarchs have long depended on habitat along the way that includes the milkweed and nectar plants they need to refuel. Unfortunately, much of that habitat has been lost in the last decade to development and pesticides. You can help remedy this by joining the Monarch Waystation Program.
Or, you can just plant some of the monarch-friendly plants suggested by Monarch Watch in their Waystation instructions.
Potted Petals can get many of the plants listed, so just call with your list.
